Nitric oxide has become a very popular bodybuilding and sports supplement. Only recently discovered, nitric oxide’s effects are clear: it is responsible for signaling the cells and veins in the body regarding blood flow, dilation, oxygen delivery, glucose uptake, muscle velocity, muscle growth and even power output. Nitric oxide has been shown to increase blood flow to the muscles, which is exactly what athletes and bodybuilders need to grow and perform. This extra blood flow brings more nutrients to the cells and removes more waste. Those taking nitric oxide while training notice fuller muscles, harder “pumps” and more strength and endurance. Nitric oxide also affects the endocrine system and signals the body to increase it’s out put of adrenaline as well as the signaling of gonadotropin releasing hormone. As you can see, nitric oxide can be a powerful ally in your quest to gain strength, endurance, mass and improve physical performance.
Many nitric oxide boosters contain L-arginine, a non-essential amino acid, which in large doses can have some side affects. Look for supplements that also contain citrulline as it appears not to have side effects. Dosing recommendations haven’t yet been clearly established. Most athletes are taking 1.5 – 3.0 grams of nitric oxide boosters spread over the course of the day.
Some of the more popular nitric oxide boosters include:
- BSN NO-Xplode!
- MuscleTech Nano-Vapor
- 1MR – One More Rep
